The two men worked their way methodically up the hall, each careful not to step in the crusted trail of discoloration that traced its way from the kitchen to the first floor bathroom. |

They were about as opposite as two men could be. The older was short and stocky, and even though he had been out of the storm for well over an hour, he was still wearing his damp coat and the collar was still turned up. |

"Damn near couldn't make it over here," he groused. "The streets are sheer ice." He flicked the ash of his cigarette in the palm of his hand and jammed it down in the recesses of his coat pocket. |
